Calls for Minister’s Dismissal Ignite Human Rights Debate in Fiji

Opposition Member of Parliament Ketan Lal has urged Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to promptly dismiss Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection.

In a public statement, Lal asserted that the people of Fiji deserve a government that embodies the values of human rights and social justice. He emphasized the need for immediate action from the Prime Minister, arguing that the leadership of Fiji should be compassionate, knowledgeable, and dedicated to justice. Lal contended that Tabuya’s actions and remarks have rendered her unfit for her position.

He accused Tabuya of showcasing a blatant disregard for human rights and justice, which he considers essential elements of a democratic society. Lal specifically criticized her support for the death penalty, suggesting that it signifies a significant misunderstanding of effective crime prevention strategies and contradicts global human rights norms. He stressed that this issue transcends political disagreement, highlighting a fundamental violation of her responsibilities and ethical duties as a minister.

“I must reiterate my deep concern regarding the recent and alarming stance taken by the Minister, advocating for the reintroduction of the death penalty for those that deal drugs in huge quantities. While I have previously condemned this reckless and regressive proposal, it is now clear that further action is necessary,” Lal stated.

FijiLive has sought comments from the Minister for Women and Children regarding these accusations.
