Calls for Inquiry: Opposition Leader Demands Transparency Amid Allegations

The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has urged the Government to conduct an Independent Inquiry into allegations made by former Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Francis Puleiwai, regarding ministerial interference in FICAC’s operations.

In his statement, Seruiratu expressed concern about the allegations and emphasized the need for investigation, agreeing with the Prime Minister on the matter. He proposed the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry following this week’s parliamentary session. This commission could include judicial officers, lawmakers, and esteemed legal experts from the private sector, provided they are not under any investigations and are impartial without conflicts of interest relating to the issues at hand.

Seruiratu underscored the seriousness of the allegations, stating they undermine good governance and democracy. He has also called on the former Deputy Commissioner to present her claims and insisted that those accused be given the opportunity to defend themselves.

“We are at a crucial juncture for our cherished nation, and as elected representatives of the Fijian people, we must strive to uncover the truth behind these allegations and work diligently to restore public trust,” Seruiratu stated.
