Calls for Inquiry: Is Fijian Governance Under Fire?

The Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has urged the Government to launch an Independent Inquiry into allegations made by former Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Francis Puleiwai, regarding ministerial interference in the agency’s operations.

In a recent statement, Seruiratu expressed that this issue is significant and needs to be urgently addressed. He echoed the Prime Minister’s sentiments on the necessity of an investigation.

“To ensure fairness, transparency, and good governance, I suggest establishing this Commission of Inquiry following this week’s parliamentary session. This Commission could consist of Judicial Officers, Members of Parliament, and esteemed legal experts from the private sector, as long as they are not under any investigations, and most importantly, they must be impartial and devoid of any conflicts of interest related to the matters being examined, while adhering to the laws in place,” Seruiratu stated.

He emphasized that the allegations are serious and strike at the core of good governance and democracy. The Opposition Leader has also called on the former Deputy Commissioner to come forward and elaborate on her claims, allowing those accused the opportunity to defend themselves.

“We stand at a pivotal moment for our beloved nation, and as the elected representatives of the people of Fiji, we must diligently seek to uncover the truth behind these allegations and work tirelessly to restore public trust,” Seruiratu concluded.
