The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has urged the Government to launch an Independent Inquiry into claims made by former Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Francis Puleiwai, regarding ministerial interference in FICAC’s operations.
In a statement, Seruiratu expressed that this issue is deeply concerning and requires immediate attention. He echoed the Prime Minister’s call for a thorough investigation into the matter.
“To promote fairness, transparency, and good governance, I suggest the formation of this Commission of Inquiry following this week’s parliamentary session. This body could comprise Judicial Officers, Members of Parliament, and leading legal experts from the private sector, ensuring that they are not under any pending investigation. It is crucial that they are impartial, free from any conflicts of interest related to the subject matter, and remain compliant with the law,” he stated.
Seruiratu emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, describing them as a fundamental threat to good governance and democracy.
He also called on the former Deputy Commissioner to step forward and clarify her claims, while ensuring that those accused are allowed to defend themselves.
“We stand at a pivotal moment for our cherished nation, and as elected representatives of the people of Fiji, we must diligently seek to uncover the truth behind these allegations and strive to restore public trust,” Seruiratu remarked.
