The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has expressed significant concern over the allegations made by Francis Puleiwai regarding Ministerial interference in FICAC. Seruiratu agrees with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka that these allegations warrant a thorough investigation.
He emphasized the necessity for an independent and impartial Commission of Inquiry to ensure fairness, transparency, and good governance. He proposed that this Commission be established following this week’s parliamentary sitting.
The proposed Commission could comprise Judicial Officers, Members of Parliament, and leading legal experts from the private sector, as long as they are not facing any pending investigations. Importantly, it is crucial that all members of the Commission remain impartial and free from any conflicts of interest regarding the issues at hand.
Seruiratu stated that the seriousness of the allegations strikes at the core of good governance and democracy. He expressed hope that Ms. Puleiwai would be available to discuss her claims and that the individuals implicated would have an opportunity to defend themselves.
He highlighted that Fiji stands at a critical juncture and that as representatives of the people, they must diligently investigate the allegations to restore public trust.
