Calls for Fiji Minister’s Ouster: Human Rights at Stake?

Ketan Lal, an opposition Member of Parliament, is urging Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to promptly remove Lynda Tabuya from her position as Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection. In his statement, Lal emphasized that the people of Fiji deserve a government that upholds the principles of human rights and social justice.

Lal called for immediate and decisive action from the Prime Minister, asserting that Fiji requires leaders who are compassionate, knowledgeable, and dedicated to justice. He believes that Tabuya’s actions and statements indicate she is unfit for her role.

He criticized Tabuya’s apparent disregard for human rights and justice, which are essential to democracy. Lal pointed out her support for the death penalty, stating that it reflects a serious misunderstanding of effective crime prevention and contradicts global human rights standards. He described this as not merely a policy disagreement but a significant violation of her responsibilities as Minister.

“I must reiterate my deep concern regarding the recent and alarming stance taken by the Minister, advocating for the reintroduction of the death penalty for those who deal drugs in huge quantities. I have previously condemned this reckless and regressive proposal, and it is now clear that further action is necessary,” Lal expressed.

FijiLive has contacted the Minister for Women and Children to request her comments on the matter.
