The Fiji Labour Party (FLP) has demanded the resignation of Barbara Malimali from her position as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry emphasized that her resignation is necessary until the allegations of office abuse against her are thoroughly and impartially investigated by independent officials.
Chaudhry argued that allowing Malimali to lead FICAC while she is under investigation would constitute a grave injustice. He pointed out that she was under arrest and being interrogated when her appointment process was hastily moved forward.
He also raised concerns regarding a close connection between Malimali and Attorney-General Graham Leung, claiming that while Leung presents himself as an independent observer, he is actually linked to her appointment behind the scenes.
According to Chaudhry, information suggests that Malimali was not a candidate for the FICAC commissioner role when it was first advertised in June 2024, but submitted her application when the position was reposted on July 13. Efforts to reach Malimali for a comment were unsuccessful.
