The Fiji Labour Party (FLP) is urging the resignation of Barbara Malimali from her position as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry emphasized that this demand is necessary until allegations of abuse of office against her are thoroughly investigated by unbiased officials.
Chaudhry expressed that allowing Malimali to lead FICAC while she is under investigation would compromise justice. He remarked, “It should be noted that she was under arrest and was being questioned when the process was hijacked by pre-empting her appointment.”
He also raised concerns regarding what he perceives as a clear connection between Malimali and Attorney-General Graham Leung. Despite the A-G’s attempts to present himself as an impartial figure, Chaudhry contends that he is intricately linked to her appointment.
Furthermore, he stated that Malimali was not an applicant when the position of FICAC commissioner was initially advertised in June 2024, but did apply when the role was reopened on July 13. Attempts to reach Ms. Malimali for a comment were unsuccessful.
