Calls for FICAC Chief to Step Down Amid Serious Allegations

The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has called for the resignation or suspension of Barbara Malimali, the head of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation into serious allegations against her.

Seruiratu expressed deep concern over the allegations, which were brought to light last month by Ana Mataiciwa, the Supervisor of Elections. She raised issues with the Acting Police Commissioner, Juki Fong Chew, involving allegations of office abuse, intimidation, and harassment of witnesses by Malimali.

Given the gravity of these accusations, Seruiratu believes it is essential for Malimali to step aside in order to uphold transparency and maintain public trust in Fiji’s institutions. He emphasized that accountability and integrity should remain paramount, particularly regarding matters of public interest.

Seruiratu questioned how an individual with such serious allegations against her could continue to fulfill her role as Fiji’s chief anti-corruption officer. He appealed to the Judicial Services Commission, which appointed Malimali, to act responsibly in addressing this situation in order to protect the already fragile reputation of both FICAC and the commission itself.

This situation underscores the critical importance of having leaders who embody the principles of integrity and accountability, particularly in positions that are meant to fight corruption. It presents an opportunity for institutional improvement and restoring public trust. The focus on transparency and swift action could lead to a stronger and more reliable anti-corruption framework in the future.

In summary, the call for Malimali to resign or be suspended highlights the ongoing scrutiny in Fiji’s governance and reinforces the need for upholding high ethical standards within public institutions.
