Calls for Constitutional Change Spark Debate in Fiji

Opposition MP Viliame Naupoto argues that the 2013 Constitution lacks a unifying effect among the people of Fiji. During his statement in Parliament, Naupoto highlighted the downsides of the current Constitution, stemming from the process that led to its creation.

He noted a significant divide, primarily along political lines, regarding support for the Constitution, which is often perceived as being aligned with a single political party. Since the inaugural election under this Constitution in 2014, it has faced criticism and ridicule both inside and outside Parliament, with numerous calls from individuals and organizations for its review.

Naupoto emphasized the need for constitutional amendments and urged fellow MPs to consider the importance of revisiting the Constitution for review and necessary changes. He asserted that such efforts are not anti-anyone or any political party, but rather pro-people, pro-nation building, and pro-democracy, serving to enhance Fiji’s young democratic system.
