Calls for Constitutional Change: A Divide in Fijian Politics

Opposition MP Viliame Naupoto has asserted that the 2013 Constitution fails to unify the people of Fiji. During his statement in Parliament at the end of the week, Naupoto highlighted that the Constitution’s creation process has led to division, primarily along political lines, regarding support for the document.

He noted that many perceive the Constitution as closely linked to a particular political party, contributing to the divide. Since the first election under this Constitution in 2014, it has faced significant criticism, both within and outside Parliament, with increasing calls from individuals and organizations for its review.

Naupoto emphasized the need for an amendment, urging fellow MPs to recognize the importance of involving the public in reviewing and potentially amending the Constitution. He clarified that this initiative is not against any individual or political party but is aimed at benefiting the people, fostering nation-building, and strengthening democracy in Fiji.
