Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has expressed his support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s plan to form an independent and impartial Commission of Inquiry to investigate allegations made by former deputy commissioner of FICAC, Francis Puleiwai.
Seruiratu emphasized that the accusations of ministerial interference in FICAC are deeply concerning and warrant thorough investigation. He stated, “I agree with the Prime Minister that this needs to be investigated. An independent, impartial Commission of Inquiry is essential.”
He further proposed that this Commission be established following this week’s parliamentary session, aiming to ensure fairness, transparency, and good governance. Seruiratu suggested that the Commission could comprise judicial officers, Parliament members, and esteemed legal professionals from the private sector, ensuring that none are currently under investigation and that they approach the matters without any conflicts of interest in accordance with the law.
He underscored the seriousness of the allegations, which he believes threaten the foundations of good governance and democracy. “I can only hope that Francis Puleiwai will be available to explain her allegations, and that those implicated will have the opportunity to defend themselves,” he added.
Seruiratu noted that Fiji is at a pivotal moment, stressing the need for representatives of the people to diligently seek the truth behind these allegations to restore public trust.
