Call for Urgent Medical Report After Tragic Death of Young Man

Opposition Crossbencher MP Penioni Ravunawa is urging the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to promptly disclose the preliminary medical report regarding Ilaisa Toroca.

The 23-year-old passed away last Saturday at Labasa Hospital following alleged medical negligence at Waiyevo Hospital in Taveuni. His father, Sitiveni Johnson, 49, asserts that negligence and poor judgment from the dentist and doctor at Waiyevo Hospital contributed to his son’s death.

“The doctor in Labasa informed me that my son had been transferred to the Labasa Divisional Hospital in time, and he could have survived,” Mr. Johnson stated. He described how his son deteriorated quickly after being transferred from Taveuni to Labasa Hospital on the same day.

The former bowser attendant at Legend’s Fuel Station suffered fatal consequences following a two-tooth extraction, as continuous bleeding exacerbated his condition. Mr. Ravunawa emphasized that releasing the medical report would provide some comfort to the grieving family and help restore public confidence in the healthcare system in Fiji.

“The timely release of information by the health authority is crucial in situations like this,” he remarked. The MP highlighted the immense stress the family faces after losing a son in his prime, adding that further delays in the release of the official report only intensify frustration among the bereaved and their relatives.
