Call for Rescinding Controversial Appointment Shakes Fiji’s Governance Landscape

The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has urged the Judicial Services Commission to reconsider the appointment of lawyer Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Seruiratu expressed concerns that her appointment could reflect poorly on the Government if it proceeds. He emphasized that while he does not hold anything against Malimali personally, there is an ongoing investigation involving her by the very authority she is set to lead.

Seruiratu expressed shock yet not surprise at this development, noting that such actions have been a consistent pattern from the Government since it took office. He highlighted that the timing of the appointment is inappropriate considering the ongoing investigation.

He stated, “It requires common sense and wisdom, especially from the Judicial Services Commission, as it tarnishes the Government’s image and implicates the appointee herself.”

Seruiratu reiterated that good governance stems from effective political leadership, along with upholding the rule of law and established procedures.

Additionally, the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption had scheduled a press conference for 11:30 am but announced a postponement to a later time or date.
