Opposition MP Jone Usamate has proposed the construction of an additional port in Suva to alleviate the congestion currently experienced at the capital’s existing port facilities. He noted that having two separate ports could enhance operational efficiency; one port for unloading and loading cargo while allowing waiting vessels to remain on the Laucala side.
Usamate’s comments came in response to a ministerial statement made by Ro Filipe Tuisawau in Parliament last Wednesday. He emphasized that an extra port would help manage the growing number of vessels arriving in Suva.
He also expressed satisfaction with the minister’s intention to review existing laws, highlighting the importance of shipping to island communities. Usamate raised concerns about the quality and safety of vessels, questioning whether the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is ensuring compliance with safety standards for fiberglass boats. He warned that failure to enforce these standards could lead to dangerous situations at sea, risking lives.
