Call for Minister’s Ouster Raises Human Rights Concerns in Fiji

Opposition MP Ketan Lal is urging Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to promptly remove Lynda Tabuya from her position as Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection.

In a recent statement, Lal emphasized that the people of Fiji deserve better leadership that adheres to the values of human rights and social justice. He stated, “Fiji deserves a government that is compassionate, informed, and committed to justice. The Minister’s actions and statements indicate she is unfit for her role.”

Lal criticized Tabuya for exhibiting a serious lack of respect for human rights and justice, which are essential to democracy. He pointed out that her support for the death penalty demonstrates a misunderstanding of effective crime prevention and contradicts international human rights standards.

“This is more than a simple policy disagreement; it shows a fundamental failure to uphold the responsibilities and ethical duties of her ministerial role,” Lal added. He expressed ongoing concern about Tabuya’s recent advocacy for reinstating the death penalty for major drug offenses, calling it a reckless and regressive proposal that requires further action.

FijiLive has sought comment from Minister Tabuya regarding these allegations.
