Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has expressed his support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s proposal to create an independent and impartial Commission of Inquiry. This Commission aims to investigate serious allegations made by former deputy commissioner of FICAC, Francis Puleiwai, regarding ministerial interference within the agency.

Seruiratu emphasized that these allegations are alarming and warrant immediate attention. He stated, “I agree with the Prime Minister that this needs to be investigated. An independent, impartial Commission of Inquiry is necessary.”

To promote fairness, transparency, and good governance, Seruiratu suggested that the Commission be established following this week’s parliamentary session. He proposed that it might include judicial officials, members of Parliament, and reputable legal experts from the private sector, ensuring that all participants are free from ongoing investigations and possess no conflicts of interest related to the issues at hand.

He characterized the allegations as serious threats to good governance and democratic principles. Seruiratu expressed hope that Francis Puleiwai would be willing to clarify her allegations and that those implicated would have the opportunity to defend themselves.

“We stand at a pivotal moment for our nation. As representatives of the Fijian people, we must diligently uncover the truth behind these claims and strive to restore public trust,” Seruiratu concluded.
