Call for Constitutional Change: A Divided Fiji?

Opposition MP Viliame Naupoto has voiced concerns that the 2013 Constitution lacks a unifying effect among the people of Fiji. Speaking during his end-of-week statement in Parliament, Naupoto pointed out that this is a significant drawback of the current Constitution, attributing it to the process through which it was established.

He highlighted a notable divide, primarily along political lines, regarding support for the Constitution. Naupoto mentioned that there is a prevailing perception that the Constitution is closely associated with a specific political party.

Since the first elections under this Constitution in 2014, it has faced ongoing criticism, with discussions both within and outside Parliament often mocking its legitimacy. Numerous individuals and organizations have consistently called for a review of the Constitution.

Naupoto urged his fellow MPs to seriously consider the necessity of returning the Constitution to the people for review and amendments as required. He emphasized that seeking amendments should not be viewed as anti-political in nature.

“This effort is not against anyone or any political party. It is in favor of the people, aimed at nation-building and strengthening democracy, which is essential for refining our young democratic framework,” he stated.
