Opposition MP Ketan Lal has expressed his concerns regarding the poor condition of the road adjacent to Savusavu Airport. Lal, a local resident, pointed out that this critical stretch of road has been downgraded from a tar-sealed surface to gravel by the road authorities, leading to more accidents and significant dust issues that impact both drivers and nearby residents.
He emphasized that this situation reflects a negligence of infrastructure and raises important questions about the priorities and financial management of the Coalition Government. “Savusavu is a bustling tourism destination, drawing visitors from around the globe to enjoy its unique beauty and charm. The airport serves as one of just two airstrips that enable air travel to the island. The condition of the road leading to this entry point is not just a local concern; it is a national issue of significance,” he stated.
Lal stressed the importance of having a smooth, safe, and dependable road to support the tourism industry, which is crucial for the economy and provides jobs for many Fijians. He noted that the switch to a gravel road has resulted in severe consequences, with rising accident rates threatening public safety and dust from passing vehicles becoming a health risk and nuisance for residents.
“This situation is not just an inconvenience; it is a clear failure to deliver safe and dependable infrastructure, which is a fundamental duty of any government,” he remarked. Lal is demanding clarity from the Fiji Roads Authority regarding this decision and questioned whether they lack the necessary funds for proper road maintenance.
“The money that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka used for an extravagant dinner could have been better spent on resealing this vital road, which would provide tangible benefits to the community rather than indulgent luxury,” he added.
Lal criticized the government’s misplaced priorities and lack of accountability, stating, “The government’s primary role is to serve the people, ensuring their safety and well-being. Neglecting critical infrastructure like roads signifies a disregard for these duties.”
He urged the government to promptly resolve this issue by allocating the necessary funds to the Fiji Roads Authority for the resealing of the road next to Savusavu Airport. “This is not merely about repairing a road; it is about reinstating public trust in our leadership and showing a commitment to the welfare of all Fijians,” Lal concluded.
