Parents and teachers at Naitasiri High School are urging the government to step in and ensure safe and dependable transportation following a recent accident that nearly resulted in tragedy for 18 high school students and two parents.
Semi Tamanivalu, whose child was involved in a similar incident last year, emphasized the need for the government to assess the transport options available to schoolchildren in highland regions. He pointed out that this was not an isolated event, as it marked the second incident involving the same transportation provider servicing six villages in Naitasiri.
Tamanivalu recounted that just a week prior, a similar mishap occurred while students were traveling to school in the same vehicle.
Vatiri Dimoala Lutua, who was present during the recent accident, described the chaotic scene filled with blood and the distressing cries of students. She reflected on the children’s expectations for a routine school day, particularly as the Year 11 students were gearing up to complete an important annual exam.
Lutua, who was traumatized by the experience, recounted her desperate efforts to assist the injured students, including lifting a spare tire off one student’s leg while trying to gather her strength to help. She expressed her heartbreak at witnessing the injuries again, especially since some of these students had also suffered injuries in the prior accident. Lutua conveyed a wish that this would be the last such incident.
The call for action emphasizes the critical need for reliable transportation options for students, highlighting that ensuring their safety should be a priority.
In light of these incidents, it becomes evident that communities and parents play an essential role in advocating for the safety of children during their daily commutes. While the past few weeks have been distressing, the awareness raised around this issue could lead to meaningful changes in transport services, ultimately ensuring a safer environment for students and peace of mind for their families.
