“Cadet Parade Commander Leads with Faith and Discipline in Fiji’s Celebrated Event”

Vilimoni Kevu, the parade commander for the Levuka Public School cadet passing-out parade, succeeded in leading one of the most impressive school parades in Fiji through dedicated prayer and fasting. The event took place at Nasau Park in Levuka, Ovalau, where Kevu, the school’s head boy, guided his cadets in displaying exceptional maneuvering skills and synchronized timing, earning the parade accolades as one of the best.

Kevu, who originates from Silana Village in Dawasamu, Tailevu, with maternal ties to Navuloa Village in Bureta, Ovalau, exemplified discipline and leadership during the event. The Levuka Public School cadet corps, comprising four detachments, had only two weeks to practice foot-drills, with many of the cadets participating in a military parade for the first time.

The school organizes its military parade every five years in conjunction with its anniversary celebrations, making all of the cadets new to the training process. “One of the biggest challenges we faced during training was learning the foot-drill basics from military instructors,” Kevu explained. He noted that this experience not only instilled discipline and obedience but also emphasized good conduct and behavior.

At 18 years of age, Kevu was awarded the baton of honor. “I didn’t expect to receive the award since it was our first parade, just like other students,” he shared. “The school holds its passing-out parade every five years, aligned with the school’s anniversary, so this honor came as a surprise.”

He expressed appreciation to God for guiding him through the challenges of training, which included mastering commands and following instructions, ultimately helping him become a better leader. “Initially, I made many mistakes while learning the commands. I prayed and fasted regarding my new role, and everything turned out well with no errors.”

The chief guest at the parade was Lieutenant Colonel Daunivakasala Kalitabua Ravunakana, chief staff officer for International Defence Cooperation in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. He addressed the students about the significance of maintaining discipline and becoming honorable citizens. “The cadet program extends beyond drills and uniforms; it plays a crucial role in developing the character and discipline of students amid changing global behaviors and declining respect for others,” Lt. Col Ravunakana emphasized. He reminded the LPS cadets that the discipline they have cultivated fosters essential values such as integrity, responsibility, and quality of service, critical for leadership in any community.

The parade was a significant part of the school’s 145th anniversary celebration.
