Cabinet Tensions: Will Lynda Tabuya Face Consequences?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka avoided providing a clear answer regarding potential disciplinary actions against Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, following her controversial remarks about reintroducing the death penalty for drug offenders in Fiji. This topic, which raises significant concerns, ideally should have been a matter for Cabinet discussion prior to public statements.

Earlier this week, Rabuka indicated that the Cabinet would address Tabuya’s actions. She has a history of disregarding Cabinet protocols, leading to calls for her removal from her ministerial role.

In a recent interview, Rabuka stated that he prefers not to make any premature judgments about the situation. He acknowledged that the matter about Lynda Tabuya remains unresolved, noting, “I have not been in Fiji long enough to address the issue. It was supposed to be dealt with by the Cabinet yesterday.”

The Prime Minister expressed regret that Tabuya disclosed her opinions publicly before they could be considered in a Cabinet setting.
