The Cabinet has approved an expansion of the termite baiting program aimed at combating the widespread issue of termite infestations in Fiji. The initiative will specifically target homes with annual incomes of less than $30,000 in the Western and Northern divisions, including residents in squatter settlements located in designated red zones.
The Asia Subterranean Termite (AST) is particularly prevalent in areas such as Ba, Lautoka, Nadi, and Labasa. The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji will oversee and monitor the baiting efforts to ensure effective eradication of these pests, which have caused significant damage to homes over the past 15 years in affected regions.
The Prime Minister’s Office, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Biosecurity Authority, will spearhead this program, which forms part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at tackling the termite infestation and its related challenges.
Flick Hygiene, a pest management company, has been awarded a government contract to launch the baiting program, beginning with 1,000 identified homes in Lautoka, indicating a proactive step towards addressing this growing issue. Expert Mohammed Zakariah noted that the situation has deteriorated recently, emphasizing the urgency behind these measures.
Overall, this initiative not only provides immediate relief to struggling households but also demonstrates the government’s commitment to enhancing public health and safety by addressing the damages caused by these pests.
In summary, the government’s endorsement of the termite baiting program is a significant move toward safeguarding homes and improving living conditions in Fiji. With dedicated oversight and collaboration among key authorities, there is hope that this initiative will effectively manage and ultimately reduce the impact of termite damage in the affected communities.
