Criticism is mounting regarding the recent expansion of Fiji’s Cabinet, which has seen the appointment of new ministers and assistant ministers. Nilesh Lal, the Executive Director of Dialogue Fiji, has labeled the Cabinet as “bloated,” emphasizing that this unprecedented level of appointments is unjustifiable considering Fiji’s population size and the serious economic challenges its citizens face, particularly amidst harsh austerity measures and a significant 66% increase in the VAT rate.

Lal advocates for a more appropriate Cabinet size of 12 to 15 ministers, stressing that the current composition of 34 ministers and assistant ministers is excessively large for the nation. He also raises concerns about the unclear roles and effectiveness of the newly appointed assistant ministers, questioning how their positions will genuinely contribute to the governance and improvements needed in areas such as poverty alleviation, tackling high living costs, and enhancing public services.

Echoing these criticisms, Opposition MP Premila Kumar has characterized the reshuffle as a “sham,” arguing that it serves mainly to protect underperforming ministers rather than facilitate meaningful governance improvements.
