Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka avoided addressing whether any disciplinary measures would be imposed on Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, for her defiance.
Tabuya made headlines with her public suggestion to reintroduce the death penalty as a means to deter drug-related crimes in Fiji, a topic she should have discussed with the Cabinet first. Earlier in the week, Rabuka indicated that the Cabinet would handle the matter regarding Tabuya’s actions.
Tabuya has a reputation for disregarding Cabinet protocols, leading to growing calls for her removal from her ministerial role.
In a recent interview, Rabuka stated that he did not wish to make a premature judgment on the situation. “The issue of Lynda Tabuya has not been resolved,” he remarked, adding that he had not been in Fiji long enough to make a definitive statement. He noted that the Cabinet was meant to address the matter the previous day.
Rabuka expressed disappointment that Tabuya shared her opinions publicly before the Cabinet could engage in discussions.
