Cabinet Controversy: Will Lynda Tabuya Face Consequences?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka avoided answering whether any measures would be taken against Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, for her insubordination. Ms. Tabuya had made public comments advocating for the reintroduction of the death penalty as a deterrent for drug offenders using Fiji as a transit point for narcotics—a matter intended for Cabinet discussion first.

Earlier in the week, Mr. Rabuka indicated that the Cabinet would address Ms. Tabuya’s actions. She is known for violating Cabinet protocols, which has led to demands for her dismissal from her ministerial role.

In a recent interview, Mr. Rabuka stated that he did not want to jump to conclusions about the situation. “The issue of Lynda Tabuya has not been dealt with,” he remarked. “I have not been in Fiji long enough to address it. It was meant to be discussed by the Cabinet yesterday (Tuesday).”

He emphasized that it was unfortunate Ms. Tabuya chose to express her opinions publicly before the Cabinet had the chance to deliberate.
