Buzzing Towards Empowerment: A Beekeeping Journey in Taveuni

Ana Tovata recently celebrated a significant achievement as she harvested her first batch of honey in Taveuni, marking a milestone in her journey as a beekeeper. As a member of the Taveuni Women’s Empowerment Support Group (TWESG) and with backing from Women’s Fund Fiji, Ms. Tovata received a double-box beehive, essential tools, and protective gear to embark on her beekeeping venture. This initial harvest produced an impressive eight liters of honey.

Ms. Tovata expressed her excitement about this new chapter, noting that the initiative is not only providing financial support for her family but also represents a crucial step forward for women in an industry traditionally male-dominated. She stated, “I hope to expand my hives and further contribute to my household’s well-being,” highlighting her aspirations for growth and empowerment.

The success of Ms. Tovata is part of a larger movement facilitated by TWESG, which aims to promote financial independence among women and break down economic barriers. TWESG secretary Nanise Savoka emphasized that initiatives like these strengthen the feminist movement by empowering women to take on roles in industries where they have historically been underrepresented.

This story resonates with broader trends in the region, similar to the achievements of other female entrepreneurs in the beekeeping industry, such as Taraivini Qaravi, who transformed her family’s passion for honey into a successful business called “Sabolo Honey.” These women exemplify resilience and the positive impact of community-driven initiatives that support local entrepreneurship and inspire others.

As more women engage in beekeeping, it not only enhances their economic status but also sets a precedent for future generations, fostering a spirit of empowerment and collaboration in the community. The journey of Ms. Tovata and her counterparts illustrates that with support and determination, women can thrive in any field, paving the way for a brighter and more equitable future.
