Business owners in Nadi are increasingly frustrated by the presence of street dwellers and beggars who they say disrupt their operations and create unsanitary conditions. Ashfaaq Khan, managing director of AL-Hamd Smart Living, highlighted that his team has repeatedly had to clean areas outside their store due to waste left by these individuals.
Khan called for a more permanent solution from the Nadi Town Council (NTC) to address the situation, suggesting a collaborative meeting with police, the Ministry of Social Welfare, and other relevant organizations to discuss practical steps. He expressed concern about the growing number of street dwellers, noting that some appear to struggle with mental health issues and can be aggressive when asked to leave.
Other business owners echoed this sentiment. Marc McElrath from Vuvale Restaurants emphasized the need for the government and social services to recognize the plight of these individuals and provide necessary support. He mentioned the possibility of assisting those in need of professional care at St Giles.
Jerry Gounder, another local businessman, pointed out the limitations of the council, stating that they face similar challenges and often have to refer issues to law enforcement. According to him, the responsibility should sit with social welfare services.
NTC special administrator chairperson Salicieli Raiwalui noted that this is an important issue that merits discussion. However, questions directed to Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, have not yet received a response.
This situation highlights the complex issue of homelessness and mental health, underscoring the need for community cooperation and comprehensive strategies. A collaborative approach involving businesses, government, and social agencies could lead to a sustainable solution that benefits both the individuals in need and the local business community.
Overall, while the current circumstances can seem disheartening, there is an opportunity for positive change through coordinated efforts that could improve the living conditions for vulnerable populations and restore a sense of order in public spaces.
