The Cabinet has approved full subsidies for increased bus fares starting next month for all students holding blue and yellow bus cards. Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka announced that the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) completed a review of current bus fares and developed a new fare calculation method with input from the Fiji Bus Operators Association.
Under this new methodology, the FCCC has proposed that student fares align with adult fares, which means the regulated student fare will be set at 50 percent of the adult fare across the board. Gavoka confirmed that the government will maintain its full subsidy for students with blue cards under the transport assistance scheme. Additionally, it will cover the 50 percent fare increase for students using yellow cards.
