A juvenile and two men are scheduled to appear in the Magistrates Court in Labasa today, facing multiple charges of burglary and aggravated robbery. Their alleged criminal activities took place during a series of home break-ins throughout Labasa between December 5 and December 31, 2024.
The first incident occurred on December 5, when the three individuals reportedly broke into the home of a 43-year-old self-employed man residing in Bocalevu, who was away in town with his family at the time. They are accused of stealing items valued at $1,104, which included 5kg of Yagona, along with various mats and bags.
On December 6, they allegedly burglarized the residence of a 50-year-old farmer from Vuniqari, Tabia, during his absence as he attended a wedding with family. The culprits are said to have taken items worth $18,894, including jewelry, clothing, mobile phones, and perfumes.
Further incidents included a break-in on December 13 at the home of a 43-year-old self-employed woman from Bocalevu, where items valued at $3,217 were stolen while she and her family attended another wedding function.
On December 20, a concerning attack occurred when they allegedly threatened a 60-year-old woman from Vunidova and her 2-year-old granddaughter with a cane knife, stealing items worth $6,372.
The final reported break-in happened on December 31 when they entered the home of a 54-year-old farmer in Bocalevu while the family was asleep, leading to the discovery of missing louver blades and stolen items valued at $1,817 upon waking.
This series of crimes highlights the ongoing concerns over safety and property security in the Labasa region.
