A juvenile and two men are set to appear in Labasa’s Magistrates Court today facing multiple charges, including burglary and aggravated robbery. The trio is accused of a series of break-ins in the Labasa area between December 5 and December 31, 2024.

The first reported incident, which occurred on December 5, involved the suspects breaking into the home of a 43-year-old self-employed man from Bocalevu while he was away with his family. They reportedly stole items valued at $1,104, including 5 kg of Yagona, mats, and bags.

The following day, they allegedly targeted the residence of a 50-year-old farmer from Vuniqari, Tabia, who was attending a wedding. In this incident, the thieves made off with valuables worth $18,894, which included jewelry, clothing, mobile phones, and perfumes.

On December 13, they struck again, entering the home of a 43-year-old self-employed woman in Bocalevu while she and her family were also at a wedding. Thieves stole shop items valued at $3,217 during this intrusion.

The situation escalated on December 20, when the suspects threatened a 60-year-old woman and her 2-year-old granddaughter with a cane knife, stealing items worth $6,372.

The final reported incident occurred on the morning of December 31, when they broke into the home of a 54-year-old farmer in Bocalevu while the family was asleep. Upon awaking, the family discovered that some louver blades had been removed, and items valued at $1,817 had been taken.

This string of burglaries has understandably instilled fear in the local community, highlighting the need for enhanced security measures and vigilance. While the situation is alarming, it also brings to light the cooperation of law enforcement and the judicial system in addressing crime within the community. The court proceedings will hopefully lead to justice for the victims and act as a deterrent for future criminal activity.
