Opposition member Mosese Bulitavu has come forward to support Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s choice of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu as the nominee for President. Bulitavu emphasized that Rabuka’s decision aligns with the established order regarding which confederacy is meant to assume the presidential role.
He pointed out that Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu from the Burebasaga confederacy served as Head of State for an extended period from 2000 to 2009, before his death in 2011, completing a nine-year term. Following that, the presidency was held by Ratu Epeli Nailatikau from the Kubuna confederacy for six years, from 2009 to 2015. The Rotuma region, which falls under Kubuna, had an additional six years of presidency, totaling 12 years for the Kubuna confederation.
Bulitavu elaborated that the transition of the presidential role from Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere to Tui Cakau signifies respect for his chief, who leads the Tovata confederacy. He mentioned that the Tui Macuata, having served only three years as President of Fiji, has requested to withdraw his nomination for another term, leading the Prime Minister to nominate the Tui Cakau for the next term representing the Tovata Confederacy.
He explained that this nomination respects their chiefly titles, as the Tui Cakau is a senior relative to the current President. The Tui Cakau is recognized as a high chief of the Tovata Confederacy, which encompasses the provinces of Cakaudrove, Bua, Macuata, and Lau. Bulitavu underscored that the relationship and mutual respect between the two leaders reflects a profound cultural significance rooted in indigenous traditions.
