The Digicel Fiji Bula Boys secured a narrow 1-0 victory against the Solomon Islands during their FIFA World Cup 26 Oceania qualifiers opener at HFC Stadium in Suva on Thursday night.
Captain Roy Krishna netted the decisive goal in the 13th minute, providing a vital boost to the team’s World Cup qualification aspirations. Following the match, Krishna praised his teammates for their performance and recognized the Solomon Islands for their resilience throughout the game.
“We know that whenever we play against the Solomons, it’s going to be a physical match. However, I believe the red card changed the dynamics of the game,” Krishna stated. He noted that had both teams remained at full strength, the outcome might have been different.
The crucial red card was issued to Aporosa Yada for a dangerous foul in the 38th minute, prompting varied reactions from the enthusiastic crowd. Despite the setback, Krishna emphasized that his team maintained a mindset as if they were still facing a full opposing side, which he credited for their success.
“We defended as a team and as a brotherhood, achieving a clean sheet, which is most important,” he remarked.
Krishna expressed excitement for upcoming matches against New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea. He also appreciated the turnout of fans, who he referred to as the team’s “extra player” for their unwavering support.
“I’m just so grateful they came out to be our 12th man tonight. Their presence really pushed us,” Krishna concluded.
