British High Commissioner to Fiji, Dr. Brian Jones, highlighted the importance of good governance in building trust among communities. At the conclusion of the RFMF Reconciliation and Restoration team workshop, Dr. Jones emphasized the role of military personnel in fostering public confidence in their institution. He shared insights on how Britain has worked on reconciling its historical actions, which has led to a shift in public perception.
As Dr. Jones expressed, he feels pride in representing Britain as a diplomat, which motivates him to lead his team in forming global relationships. He drew parallels between this experience and the need to restore pride within the RFMF and other Fijian institutions, questioning whether the term ‘coup’ still tarnishes Fiji’s international image.
Dr. Jones acknowledged the progress the military has made towards reconciliation, though he noted that broader efforts with the rest of the nation may take time. He urged that continuous dialogue is necessary, and affirmed the support of the UK government for Fiji’s reconciliation journey.
Major Mesake Nadao Daunitoko, a member of the RFMF Reconciliation and Restoration team, stated that the recent three-day training focused on restorative justice principles. This initiative is part of a broader program aimed at reconciliation and will continue evolving in the upcoming phases.
The RFMF Reconciliation and Restoration program is anticipated to conclude by November.
