Fiji weightlifter Daniel Shaw expressed his gratitude after securing a bronze medal in the 81kg junior category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship (CWC), marking a successful return from a four-month injury layoff.
In an interview with SUNsports, the 19-year-old athlete mentioned that he aimed for a silver medal. He stated, “I’m pretty happy that I’ve won bronze despite me pushing for silver in the last attempt and it’s God’s plan.” Shaw is now looking forward to competing in the Pacific Mini Games in Palau.
Shaw faced challenges during his preparation due to an elbow injury he sustained while competing in Auckland at the Oceania Championship. “I tore a ligament in my elbow, which kept me out for four months, but I started to pick up from there,” he explained. He resumed training in May and worked hard to prepare for the CWC event.
He acknowledged the support he received from Weightlifting Fiji’s president Della Shaw-Elder and head coach Henry Elder, saying, “I’d like to thank them for trusting me to step back on the platform after my injury.” Shaw also expressed gratitude toward his team for maintaining a positive attitude during his preparations.
Reflecting on the tournament, Shaw indicated he plans to put in extra effort and remain focused, stating, “I just have to stay consistent, listen to my coaches and everything will fall into place.” He also encouraged young people to heed their parents’ advice, emphasizing that foundational values begin at home.
