Fiji’s weightlifter Daniel Shaw has expressed his gratitude for winning a bronze medal in the 81kg junior category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship (CWC), especially after overcoming a four-month injury setback. In an interview with SUNsports, the 19-year-old reflected on his performance, stating that while he aimed for a silver medal, he was content with his bronze finish. “I’m pretty happy that I’ve won bronze despite me pushing for silver in the last attempt, and it’s God’s plan,” Shaw remarked.
Looking ahead, Shaw is focused on the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Palau. He shared the challenges he faced following an elbow injury that had sidelined him for four months. “I tore a ligament in my elbow back in Auckland during the Oceania Championship, so I was out for four months,” he explained. He noted his progress since May, when he managed to lift a bar above his head and began training rigorously for this competition.
Shaw acknowledged the importance of personal commitment and thanked the president of Weightlifting Fiji, Della Shaw-Elder, and head coach Henry Elder for their support in his return to competitive weightlifting post-injury. He also expressed appreciation for his team’s support and their positive attitude during his preparation.
He emphasized the need for consistency in training and adherence to his coaches’ guidance, stating, “I just have to stay consistent, listen to my coaches, and everything will fall into place.” Shaw concluded with a message for the youth, encouraging them to heed their parents, noting that foundational values begin at home.
