The Chinese Embassy recently hosted a welcoming reception for the Guandong Delegation and the Bright Journey Medical team, who spent two days in Fiji providing cataract treatment at the CWM Eye Clinic.
Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, emphasized the significance of the partnership between Guandong, China, and Fiji, noting that this collaboration has led to strides in infrastructure, medical care, and education within the region. He mentioned that the sister-city relationship established in 2011 between Guandong and Suva has fostered successful cooperation in various areas, including trade and cultural exchange. Notable projects funded by Guandong include the renovation of the Suva Civic Center and the upgrading of Marist Brothers High School.
Ambassador Jian pointed out that cataracts have been a significant hurdle for many Fijians in caring for their families, but the efforts of the Bright Medical Team have been instrumental in alleviating this issue. This team has been visiting Fiji and other Pacific Island nations since 2013 to conduct free cataract surgeries. Their efforts have successfully restored vision for over 200 patients, earning them the affectionate nickname “Angel of Light” among many in the Pacific Islands.
Hung Wenyong, a member of the Bright Medical Team, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to treat 50 patients in Fiji, with 47 suffering from cataracts. He highlighted that while their primary goal was addressing eye health, they also valued the chance to strengthen the bond between Fiji and China.
The ongoing partnership between China and Fiji remains beneficial, paving the way for continued enhancements in the Fijian economy.
This collaboration is a beacon of hope for many Fijians as it not only addresses immediate health concerns but also fortifies long-term socio-economic relationships. By continuing to prioritize health care and education improvements, initiatives like these exemplify how international cooperation can lead to significant progress and uplift communities.
