The Chinese Embassy recently hosted a welcoming reception for the Guadong Delegation and the Bright Journey Medical Team, who have been in Fiji for two days to perform cataract surgeries at the CWM Eye Clinic.
Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, emphasized the significance of the ongoing cooperation between Guadong, China, and Fiji. He noted that this partnership has facilitated advancements in various fields, including infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
Ambassador Zhou pointed out that Guadong and Suva have enjoyed a sister-city relationship since 2011, which has yielded positive outcomes in infrastructure, trade, and cultural exchanges. He cited the renovation of the Suva Civic Center and the upgrading of Marist Brothers High School as two notable examples of Guadong’s contributions.
He also acknowledged the impact that cataract disease has on the Fijian population’s ability to support their families. The Bright Medical Team has been instrumental in alleviating this burden, having provided free cataract surgeries to over 200 patients since the team’s first visit to Fiji in 2013. They are affectionately referred to as the “Angel of Light” by many in the Pacific Islands.
Hung Wenyong, a member of the Bright Medical Team, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to treat 50 patients during their visit, 47 of whom were suffering from cataracts. He reiterated that the primary goal of their trip was to provide medical assistance, while also strengthening the diplomatic relationship between Fiji and China.
Overall, the partnership between China and Fiji continues to foster positive developments in Fiji’s economy and healthcare services, showcasing the benefits of international cooperation in addressing healthcare needs.
This collaboration not only exemplifies the spirit of goodwill but also paves the way for future initiatives that could enhance the quality of life for many in Fiji.
