Rajendra Prasad, an academic from the University of the South Pacific, has called on the Government to communicate with citizens in a more accessible language. Speaking at a recent public lecture, Prasad highlighted the common belief that English is universally understood in Fiji.
He stated, “There is a perception that people would only be happy to contribute in the English language.” Prasad emphasized the importance of indigenous languages when discussing critical information, warning that mere translation often fails to convey the true meaning.
For Fiji to initiate a meaningful truth and reconciliation process, he believes it is essential for the government to engage with individuals in languages they fully comprehend. Prasad noted that Fiji’s multiracial composition makes it vital to carefully translate important concepts, as this can significantly influence a person’s willingness to participate.
He stressed the need for the government to recognize that the assumption that everyone understands English is inaccurate, suggesting that effective grassroots communication relies on thoughtful language usage.
