Bridging the Gap: Why Gender Equality is a Win for Business

Promoting gender equality in the workplace is crucial not only from an ethical standpoint but also for the numerous benefits it offers to employers. Pravesh Sharma, chair of the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (HRADC), emphasized that the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji, through Section 20, ensures every individual’s right to fair employment practices, which includes humane treatment and appropriate working conditions. The Employment Relations Act 2007 echoes these rights, reaffirming their importance in the workplace.

Despite these legal frameworks, disparities remain significant. Women are frequently paid less than men and are still underrepresented in leadership roles and decision-making positions. Sharma highlighted concerning statistics: 23% of women in the workplace have experienced sexual harassment, yet only 8% reported these incidents. Furthermore, 43% of mothers face maternity discrimination. A 2016 study by the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement revealed that one in five women encounter sexual harassment in their workplaces.

Discrimination can manifest in subtle ways, whether intentionally or unintentionally, conveying disrespect and perpetuating inequality. Sharma pointed out that achieving gender equality benefits all employees. Research indicates that workplaces that prioritize gender equality tend to foster better outcomes for both male and female staff.

To counteract gender inequality, Sharma suggested conducting pay audits to uncover disparities among employees. This step would enhance transparency regarding the gender pay gap within organizations. Additionally, flexible working arrangements should be prioritized. While the pay gap among younger workers is narrowing, it remains a growing issue for working mothers and women employed in the care sector.

As workforce demographics evolve, maintaining the momentum toward gender equality in the workplace becomes increasingly important. Sharma concluded that gender equality should not only be viewed as an ethical responsibility but also regarded as a critical business priority.
