Bridging the Gap: New Funding Promises Opportunities for Students

The Coalition Government is taking significant steps to bridge the education and employment gap by allocating $150 million to the Tertiary Scholarship and Loan Scheme (TSLS). Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad made this announcement during the Golden Jubilee celebrations at Waidina College last week.

Prasad emphasized the collaboration with key educational stakeholders, which has facilitated scholarships for 300 students to engage in industry-specific training and earn certificates or diplomas with prominent employers like Energy Fiji Limited and Telecom. He noted that this initiative will help these students secure employment with the companies that trained them after completing their programs.

Additionally, the government has initiated a Hardship Assistance Scheme aimed at private students who excel academically but face financial difficulties due to circumstances beyond their control. This support will be available for students at all levels, from diplomas to degrees.

The DPM also mentioned the Coalition Government’s Back-to-School Support Payment of $200 for each student from families with incomes below $50,000, highlighting its commitment to educational support.

“These initiatives signify more than just financial investment in education; they reflect our government’s dedication to empowering citizens through education, skills development, and employment opportunities, which align with the new National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050,” Prasad concluded.
