Bridging the Gap: Fiji’s Climate Resilience in Health Care

The Ministry of Health in Fiji has acknowledged that while it has made strides in building a national process for climate resilience, these improvements have not yet been effectively implemented at healthcare facilities. To bridge this gap, the Fiji Health Adaptation Plan (FHAP) for 2024-2030 has been introduced. This plan aims to ensure that the frameworks developed at the national level are effectively translated into action at healthcare facilities.

The next steps outlined in the FHAP include raising awareness about existing climate resilience tools, sharing best practices among health professionals, and engaging frontline healthcare workers in local assessments of climate-related health impacts. This initiative emphasizes the importance of community involvement and coordination while also enhancing governance at both divisional and sub-divisional levels. The goal is to empower healthcare staff with the necessary tools to effectively respond to the health challenges posed by climate change.

As part of the FHAP’s focus on strengthening the health system, the Ministry has committed to following the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Operational Framework for building climate-resilient health systems. Significant progress has been reported against indicators for climate-transformative leadership and governance laid out in the framework, with accomplishments including the creation of a Climate Change and Health Unit and the development of the Climate Change and Health Strategic Action Plan (CCHSAP).

The report also notes the progression towards greater collaboration across sectors that influence health, highlighted by a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) and the Fiji Meteorological Service.

In summary, the efforts described in the FHAP represent a significant step forward in equipping Fiji’s health system to tackle the challenges of climate change. The proactive approach being taken not only reflects a commitment to public health but also underscores the importance of community empowerment and intersectoral collaboration in building a more resilient health infrastructure.

This initiative highlights a hopeful path forward, as the ministry integrates these essential climate resilience strategies aimed at safeguarding public health in the face of climate change. Strengthening these links between national strategy and local action will be key in addressing the health impacts of environmental changes in Fiji.
