Bridging the Gap: Enhancing Disaster Support in Communities

There is a notable lack of awareness in communities regarding whom to contact for assistance during disasters. This concern was highlighted by Seinimere Veitata, the Fiji National Program Coordinator for the Women’s Resilience to Disaster Program at United Nations Women, during a workshop in Labasa. She emphasized the need for stakeholders to enhance their support within civil society organizations.

Veitata pointed out the critical importance of collaboration among all stakeholders to tackle this issue effectively. She noted that these organizations can facilitate access for communities to the necessary assistance.

Responding to concerns about language barriers faced by some officials, she mentioned that there are established channels that all stakeholders should follow before engaging with communities. She also highlighted the development networks within the community, which play a vital role in not just sharing information but also in translating it.

Regardless, she stressed the necessity for collective action to address the challenges communities encounter during and after disasters.
