The Coalition Government has announced a significant $150 million funding boost to the Tertiary Scholarship and Loan Scheme (TSLS) as part of its efforts to bridge the gap between education and employment. This initiative was emphasized by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, during the Waidina College Golden Jubilee celebrations last week.
Professor Prasad noted that through collaboration with key stakeholders in education, the government has successfully launched scholarships for 300 students to engage in industry-based training, allowing them to earn a Certificate or Diploma from employers like Energy Fiji Limited and Telecom. He expressed optimism about this initiative, stating, “It will certainly expand the horizons of some 300 students, who will be able to work for the employers that trained them after completing their program.”
In addition to the scholarships, the government has introduced the Hardship Assistance Scheme, aimed at helping private students who excel academically but face financial difficulties through no fault of their own. “Through this scheme, students studying at all levels, from diplomas to degrees, will be assisted,” he explained.
Furthermore, the Coalition Government is providing a Back-to-School Support Payment of $200 for each student from families earning below $50,000, reinforcing its commitment to educational support to ensure that children receive necessary assistance.
Professor Prasad remarked that these initiatives represent more than mere investments in education; they reflect the government’s dedication to empowering citizens through education, skills, and employment opportunities, aligning with the new National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.
