The Coalition Government is taking significant steps to bridge the gap between education and employment by allocating $150 million to the Tertiary Scholarship and Loan Scheme (TSLS). This initiative was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad during the Golden Jubilee celebrations at Waidina College last week.
DPM Prasad noted that through collaboration with key educational stakeholders, the Coalition Government is offering scholarships to 300 students for industry-based training. These students will have the opportunity to earn a Certificate or Diploma with prominent employers such as Energy Fiji Limited and Telecom. “This initiative will undoubtedly broaden the future prospects of these 300 students, allowing them to secure employment with the companies that trained them upon program completion,” he stated.
In addition, the government has launched the Hardship Assistance Scheme aimed at supporting private students who excel academically but face financial challenges. “This scheme will provide assistance to students across all levels, from diplomas to degrees,” Prasad explained.
He further elaborated on the Coalition Government’s Back-to-School Support Payment, providing $200 per student for families with incomes below $50,000, as part of its dedication to enhancing educational support for children.
Prasad emphasized that these initiatives represent more than just educational investments; they exemplify the government’s commitment to empowering citizens through education, skill acquisition, and employment opportunities, which align with the new National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.
