Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry has urged the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) to prioritize the advancement of better race relations as a vital step towards gaining the trust of all Fijians in the country’s diverse multicultural landscape. His remarks come in response to GCC Chair Ratu Viliame Seruvakula’s comments about proposed amendments to the constitution, where Chaudhry expressed concerns over the continuous attempts to reform the constitution without acknowledging the evolving status of the iTaukei community, emphasizing that they are not at risk of disappearing.
Ratu Seruvakula highlighted the importance of constitutional amendments to ensure that the rights of indigenous Fijians are duly represented, noting that the iTaukei community was not adequately consulted in previous constitutional changes. He pointed out that many existing laws, rooted in colonial history, hinder the iTaukei’s ability to negotiate fair agreements regarding their resources. This has led to ongoing discussions about the socio-economic challenges and cultural identity faced by the community.
Chaudhry called on the GCC to focus on a national agenda that promotes the orderly development of Fiji. He argued that the iTaukei community is resource-rich and holds key positions in civil service and government. He advised against a perception of stagnation among the chiefs and encouraged a shift in attention towards self-improvement rather than an over-emphasis on constitutional protectionism.
These discussions reflect a broader movement towards more inclusive governance and the recognition of indigenous rights. They align with recent calls from the GCC for reforms and constructive dialogue aimed at addressing pressing issues impacting the iTaukei, such as legislative changes to confront societal challenges, including drug abuse and domestic violence, while advocating for equitable representation for all ethnic groups in Fiji.
The GCC’s stance resonates with prior efforts to reevaluate constitutional frameworks. These dialogues may lead to constructive outcomes that not only benefit the iTaukei community but also promote unity and understanding among Fiji’s diverse populace, ultimately improving socio-economic conditions for all citizens.
This emphasis on reform indicates a shared commitment to fostering a future where every community in Fiji can succeed, instilling hope for a more equitable and harmonious society.
