The Chinese Embassy recently held a welcoming reception for the Guadong Delegation and the Bright Journey Medical team, who have been in Fiji for two days providing cataract surgery at the CWM Eye Clinic.
Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, emphasized the significance of the collaborative relationship between Guadong and Fiji, which has facilitated advancements in infrastructure, healthcare, and education. He noted that since establishing a sister-city relationship in 2011, the two entities have engaged in fruitful cooperation across various sectors. Notable projects funded by Guadong include the renovation of the Suva Civic Center and the upgrade of Marist Brothers High School.
Ambassador Zhou highlighted the ongoing issue of cataracts, which affects many Fijians’ ability to support their families, expressing gratitude towards the Bright Medical Team for their contribution in alleviating this problem. Since 2013, the team has been conducting free eye surgeries in Fiji and other Pacific Island nations, reportedly restoring vision for over 200 patients, earning them the endearing title of “Angel of Light.”
Hung Wenyong, a representative from the Bright Medical Team, expressed appreciation for the chance to treat 50 patients, 47 of whom suffered from cataracts. He mentioned that the mission not only aimed to provide medical assistance but also to strengthen ties between Fiji and China.
The longstanding relationship between China and Fiji has yielded numerous benefits for the Fijian economy and society, paving the way for continued growth and development.
This collaboration serves as a beacon of hope, showcasing the positive outcomes of international partnerships, especially in improving healthcare access and fostering goodwill between nations.
In summary, the event highlights the ongoing support and valuable contributions from international partners to enhance the quality of life for Fijians, reinforcing the importance of global cooperation in addressing critical health issues.
