Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently undertaking a two-day trip to the Northern Division, focusing on the review of proposed upgrades to roads included in the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. Accompanying him is Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee.

This significant project is being funded by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). With a budget estimated at FJD $300 million, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project aims to stand as a major development under the BRI in Fiji.

During his visit, Rabuka emphasized the critical need to integrate local feedback into the project plans. This approach aims not only to improve connectivity through upgraded roads but also to create job opportunities for locals throughout the construction process.

Key areas viewed during the inspection include the 15km stretch of Nabouwalu Road (Bua to Nasolo) and the 35km route from Nabalebale to Dogoru (Wailevu West Coast Road). Fiji Roads Manager North, Delana Rabalaka, was present to provide insights into the project’s technical and logistical aspects.

Additionally, the delegation participated in a briefing led by Provincial Administrator Savusavu, Jovesa Naqarikau, at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu. The briefing shed light on the region’s economic potential, which is expected to greatly benefit from the planned road improvements.

Ambassador Lee expressed his positive outlook on the project, highlighting its expected contributions to strengthening infrastructure and facilitating regional growth. He noted that the upgraded roads would likely enhance access for rural communities and stimulate vital sectors such as tourism and renewable energy, including hydropower.

This initiative represents a hopeful step forward for Fiji, as improved infrastructure is poised to elevate economic opportunities and access throughout the region, thereby improving the quality of life for many residents. The collaboration between the Fijian government and China under the BRI is aimed at fostering tangible benefits for local communities and enhancing the nation’s connectivity.
