Former tertiary lecturer Akosita Toga emphasized that breast cancer is more than just statistics; it represents the real stories that affect families, friends, and communities. She made these remarks during an event at the Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education on Friday, which was part of the institution’s Picktober and Diwali celebrations.
Ms. Toga noted that no individual should face breast cancer in isolation and encouraged nursing students and staff to inform people about the breast health care services available in Fiji. “Breast cancer impacts countless lives—our mothers, sisters, friends, and even ourselves. No one should fight cancer alone,” she stated.
She underscored the importance of early detection and proper treatment as key preventative measures against breast cancer, urging students to raise awareness on this issue. October is recognized globally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), a campaign designed to promote awareness about breast cancer.
This month focuses on the significance of early detection, timely diagnosis, comprehensive treatment, and the essential support for those living with cancer.
