Breaking the Silence: The Hidden Struggle of Abuse Victims in Fiji

Shamima Ali, coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, has highlighted the troubling trend of a “conspiracy of silence” that often prioritizes the protection of abusers over victims of domestic abuse. In a recent interview, Ali noted that family members and religious leaders frequently pressure victims to avoid reporting incidents to authorities.

She explained that individuals often discourage women from taking action against their husbands by invoking the “breadwinner argument,” questioning who would provide for the family if the husband is reported for his actions. This sentiment, according to Ali, is not only pervasive among the general public but is also echoed by law enforcement, further deterring women from seeking help.

Despite advancements made by various organizations aimed at raising awareness and supporting women, the silence surrounding abuse remains prevalent within communities. Ali acknowledged some progress, stating that there are now organizations that listen to women and support their choices. Nonetheless, she stressed that the conspiracy of silence persists, especially concerning cases of sexual violence, including rape and child abuse, where the perpetrators are often trusted family members.

Ultimately, Ali emphasized that society must shift its focus to protect victims rather than the perpetrators, advocating for greater support and protection for those who have suffered abuse.
